I think it's going to be a great year! Our theme:
"Building a Sure Foundation"
was a big hit. The kids were more excited about the chunks of granite I gave them (to remind them of building a foundation on the "rock" of our Redeemer), than anything in past years (I also tied in how there are MANY temples made from granite because it's strong and unyielding).
We did an object lesson where they tried to stand on a ball (we used a volleyball). We talked about how unstable, and dangerous it is. A few could do it for a few seconds, but there was no lasting stability. Then, I had them stand on a table. We talked about the contrast. We used the picture from last year of the lighthouse in the storm. It is steadfast because of the rock on which it is built. Grandpa and Grandma Stream pointed out that, just like our testimonies, buildings that are new and shiny can become run down and frail if not constantly maintained. We again tied in the renovation of the Atlanta Temple.
I read to them an account of the 3 little pigs. Each pig had a choice. One chose a "good" choice, one chose a "better" choice, and one chose the "best" choice. The third little pig, built a sturdy foundation, and used only the "best" building materials. Doing the easy thing because we want something NOW, will leave us empty in the end. Making the best choices, even though most times it is the harder thing to do, will keep us on the straight and narrow path. The kids are going to write down their "best" choices and put them in the piggy bank throughout the week. They can also put in "best" choices they see others making. At the end of the week, we will read the slips.
We had a potato and salad bar. I thought it went along with our theme of "Building upon a Foundation". Brityn and I also made a 3 layer homemade chocolate cake for dessert.
Kevin and Grandpa Stream gave all the kids priesthood blessings to give them strength for the coming school year. They were so special and I feel so blessed to have a worthy priesthood holder in my home, and to have had my parents here to share in all of the festivities.
Wishing all of you a happy 2011-2012 School Year!!

that is awesome. I always love to see what you do at this time of year - so creative and inspiring!!!
you are seriously AMAZING. i love your theme so so much. i stole your theme idea, but not quite as beautiful as you do it. ours is VERY simple, but you saw it on my blog. it's almost laughable trying to get a 3 yr old to pay attention or memorize a scripture...hmmmm, we'll see. :)
anyway, bottom line: you inspire me.
wow, i'm so impressed! you get the mother of the year ward for sure!
You're kinda good at this whole mom thing.
