To Easter Bunny or not to Easter Bunny?

Because Easter is right around the corner, I decided to let you all know about an experiment I tried last year.  I overheard a friend (by overheard I mean straining to listen to a conversation I wasn't a part of) telling about how they do not have the Easter Bunny come for Easter.  They color eggs, and do other traditional activites, but the Easter Bunny is not involved in any way, shape, or form.  Easter is about our Savior and the miracle that is the atonement.  Not about a bunny  (in my mind the Easter Bunny was a human sized male rabbit that wore a vest and a bow tie, because that's realistic!) that brings candy and presents.  Well, huh, I thought.  That makes a lot of sense.  As Easter approached, we talked about the atonement and our Family Home Evenings centered around that theme.  Easter weekend, we colored eggs, in preparation for our easter egg hunt the following afternoon.  Sunday dinner was followed by a lesson, and an egg hunt.  Much to my amazement not one of the children asked about the Easter Bunny or their Easter Baskets.  Makes me wonder how much of this commercial crap we are pushing on our children.  We had such great success with this that we are trying it again this year!

For sure we are cramming lots of commercialism stuff into our kids. I agree...we need to focus on the ressurection and atonement at this time of year. We have had some great lessons around easter, and there is some really good church dvds out also.."He is Risen" and others. I'm still a fan of the Easter Bunny though. The guy brings chocolate for heavens sake! As long as the kids know its for a little fun, and has in no way anything to do with the true meaning of Easter! We have to put the focus where it is really important...the Savior!

Don't get me wrong! We still get plenty of chocolate and treats in the plastic eggs! Please, like I could ever do without that!

I thinks that is a really good idea. I think along with Christmas that alot of the commercial things and gifts are more for the parents than the. I know Dace would be completely satisfied with an egg hunt and that is all. I still agree with the stuffing those plastic eggs as full as they can get with chocolate and yummy things.

That is so interesting, I never really thought about that. I love the things the Easter bunny brings(I even thought that I would be the Easter bunny in our(scott and my) home). You can still do family home evenings and center "Easter time" around Christ, but it is kinda fun to see what the "Easter Bunny" brought on Easter morning. I don't know, maybe I'm just way to commercial about holidays. I think I get it from mom. Scott gets irritated with all of my silly decorations on all of the holidays. Kinda off the subject, but does anyone remember when we went on vacation around easter time, and Mom and Dad or I mean the "Easter Bunny" set out treats for us in the hotel room? I thought that was so awesome! -MOKE (not scott)

p.s. Does anyone else get annoyed with the DANG word verification crap before you can publish your comment?!?!?

Yes! I do remember that. That was really fun! So awesome how our family turns something like a car breakdown into a fun time!

I'm with you about Easter: focus on the Savior and the Resurrection.

And on Saturday, there's no harm in hiding some eggs or rolling some down a hill on the desert (Any sources for this Emery County tradition? People up here think it's the funniest thing ever--and have never heard the verb "Eastering," as in: They're out Eastering on the desert.)

I just can't bear to strain my credibility by looking into my children's eyes and explaining the logistics of an Easter Bunny. I won't do it. Solidarity, Sister--and a solid chocolate bunny too!
